HERALD SUN JULY 1 2004 she's SO PARTICULAR It took three publicists, one assistant, one make up artist and 60 minutes to get Cyndi ready for her photo with HIT this week. Now 51,Lauper admits she's had cosmetic surgery, but not just for reasons of vanity. 'I did have surgery because in 1988 I had a tumour in my saliva gland. My whole face started to shift in the 90s,so I went to a doctor and said,'Listen,I don't mind growing old,but not like Quasimodo, please'.But I didn't want to look like Joan Rivers.I just wanted my face straight. But you know, after you have a baby you want the tummy tuck....but more than just cosmetically,I want to feel strong.I am very strong.I love doing yoga so I become strong from the inside out.The consciousness of health now is very different from what it was for the generations before us.I have a six year old son(Declyn)I want to remain healthy to keep up with him.He has the energy of 10 adults. But I feel blessed.I never look at my life and say'Well you're this age, this is what you should do.'I still do what I want.If you're not doing what you want in life it makes you really miserable.' Lauper says part of the fun of that is still being on stage after 'discovering'her voice in the 90s on the organic Shine album.'Frankly,I don't give a damn!If a man can do it,I can do it.Who died and left who in charge of when I'm allowed to do something and when I'm not?As long as I'm the best I can be at it,as long as I put 110% into it,why should I stop?" Her latest album,At Last,is a collection of cover versions, and Lauper is no stranger to being covered herself.Time After Time has been covered more than 80 times(everyone from Eva Cassidy to Novaspace to Miles Davis to Matchbox Twenty)while Girls Just Want To Have Fun has been sampled for the new single by Cam'ron.Lauper was aware of Kasey Chambers' cover of her 1986 hit True Colors and was getting a copy of it sent to her hotel.'I've heard it's really beautiful.Originally True Colours came to me as a country song;it was a country/gospel song.I kind of stripped it down.I realised what the words said was kind of sacred.I had a friend who'd died of AIDS,we didn't know what it was then. When I did True Colors I was singing for his survivors,me being one of them, and healing myself.Odd things happened while I was singing that song,it was like this bigger power was always there.I wanted people to be driving in their cars and hear that song and hear a whisper in their ear,a call to something deeper-using a commercial medium to do something spiritual. And it worked. In the end I'm grateful I had the courage to do it.' Lauper is quick to point out her live show isn't 'an 80's show',but many of her signature songs are in there. While she is unlikely to perform The Goonies R Good Enough in honour of the film The Goonies being re-released in Melbourne('I don't do it anymore, but I'll think about it:every now and again I do it acappella.'),expect to hear her 80s masturbation anthem She Bop.'There's new interest in She Bop,which I think is hilarious.People are asking,'What's the hidden meaning?'it's not very hidden!Britney Spears has one(masturbation song)now(Touch Of My Hand)but her A & R guy is the guy I wrote She Bop with,so what do you expect?I think he thinks everybody should do it.But her song mentions 'hand'-I didn't want to mention 'hand'.I wanted a song that worked on two levels:a song children thought was about dancing and grown-ups can listen to and have a giggle. The fact that all of a sudden I was Dr Ruth and it was on the front of the newspapers...that was funny.' _________________________________________________________________ Play Love Hunt to win a $9000 holiday and find love! http://mobilecentral.ninemsn.com.au/mclovehunt/lovehunt.aspx ************************************************************************ The Fearless Mailing List is a private list for Cyndi Lauper Fans.
