"At this rate, the album is not going to sell more than Sisters of Avalon." How do you figure? Here at work, where it's well known what a Lauper nut I am, I've had many conversations both with good friends and with near strangers who have told me about, or sent me some link to, an internet story on MSN or CNN and all those other places where SOA never got any exposure. Lots of people have come up and "heard somewhere" about a new jazz album from Cyndi, so what did I know aobut it? she's already booked on the TODAY show and I hear a great deal more TV exposure is being booked as I write this. And just an observation about singles--AT LAST is not being aimed at an audience who cares about buying singles. Most of the people who have an interestin in standards are going to buy the whole thing or fogetaboutit. People 30 and older don't mess with buying singles. They have the income to shell out $15 (and they're not as willing to learn the MP3 thing) and get the CD immediately. So from what I've seen, Sony is handling this perfectly, and I predict that this album will truly be the big comeback us fans have been waiting for for years. I could be wrong, but I feel very good about this, and I don't think there's a better way to handle the material than the way it's being handled.
